Rediscover Your Radiance

Beauty advice for women over 40 has gotten complicated.

It doesn’t have to be.

Maria Velve Makeup Artist

I'm Maria Velve

I help women understand what their skin needs at this stage of life, and feel fresh, confident and most importantly, like themselves again.

Despite what the beauty industry would like you to believe, your skin hasn’t betrayed you and you haven’t stopped knowing how to take care of it. Something simpler is going on: the rules changed, and nobody told you.

I know because it happened to me.

For most of my career, I was the person with the answers. Twenty years as a professional makeup artist, a kit that worked on every face, techniques I could do with my eyes closed. And then my clients started saying the same things to me, over and over.

My foundation looks cakey now, and it never used to.
My brows are disappearing. I don’t look bad, exactly. I just don’t look like me anymore.

Around the same time, I went into perimenopause myself.

That’s when it finally clicked.

These women weren’t doing anything wrong — they were following advice written for skin they no longer had.

Products that had worked for fifteen years stopped working. Techniques designed to sculpt a younger face were sitting badly on a face that had changed.

And most of the beauty industry hadn’t bothered to notice, let alone write anything new.

Your skin didn’t fail you. The advice just wasn’t written for this stage of life.

A makeup artist and a college professor — an unusual combination that turned out to matter.

I trained at the Blanche Macdonald Institute in Vancouver and hold a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from York University. Along the way I’ve taught English in Korea, built intricate costume makeup for film, and managed a busy luxury spa in downtown Toronto.

It isn’t a tidy career path. But, it left me with two things that matter enormously in this work:

  1. I can look at a face and know what it needs.
  2. I can teach you to do it yourself — in your own bathroom, on an ordinary Tuesday, without me standing beside you.

That second one is really the whole point. A beautiful result I create and you can’t recreate isn’t a result. It’s a photograph.

The Approach

What I believe after twenty years

A few things have become non-negotiable for me.

Understanding comes before products.

Most women don’t need a longer routine. They need to know why their skin is behaving this way, so they can stop paying for things that were never going to help.

Fewer things, gently chosen.

Mature skin is often sensitive skin. I lean toward simple formulations, lightly scented or unscented, and I only recommend what I’ve tested myself. No eleven-step routine you’ll abandon in a few months.

You, still recognisably you.

I’m not here to make you look twenty-five. That’s a trap, and it’s why so much advice aimed at our age group feels quietly insulting. I want you to see yourself in the mirror — rested, lit, present. Not corrected.
